Lent prep.

It’s definitely a big fat Tuesday.  At 11:00 this morning, I was shocked to see that it was indeed 11:00, as my subconscious had led me to believe I had already eaten lunch and we were well into the afternoon.  And then I remembered it’s Tuesday.  And not just any Tuesday.  Tuesday of a five-day work week.  Life is hard.

Lent begins tomorrow.  I am giving up Facebook because it’s annoying and Twitter because it turns me into a rage-against-mostly-Paul-Ryan-but-also-others-machine.  Don’t worry, I will continue to blob, but I won’t be posting to Facebook.  Allow me, then, to shamelessly beg you to subscribe to my blog.  If you scroll down to the bottom of this page, you will see a box where you can enter your email.  I’m pretty sure it won’t spam you.  Blogger is a Google operation, so if you have problems, take them up with Will.

As our President would say, a blessed Lent to all the haters and losers.

Happy Easter Monday.

Late blob, Easter edition.  Yesterday, besides being the celebration of our Lord’s resurrection and triumph over death, was my first day back on Facebook since the beginning of Lent.  I had been entertaining the idea of quitting Facebook for a while, so giving it up for Lent felt like a good opportunity to experiment with a Facebook-free life.  I hoped it would be like when I gave up AOL Instant Messenger (“AIM”, if you recall) for Lent my junior year of high school.  Before that, I was addicted to AIM.  I’d sign on as soon as I sat down to start my homework and log off just before I went to bed.  Of course, there were valuable chats with Kelsey, necessary homework discussions, and some fun, light cyber-bullying (everyone relax, we just made up a screen name to play an extended prank on a girl we knew…all before cyber bullying got such a bad name).  But there was also a lot of checking people’s away messages, staring at my buddy list wondering if my architecture camp crush would sign on so I could then agonize over whether or not to instant message (“IM”) him, etc.  After long, I realized it was an unproductive, soul-sucking hole, so I gave it up for Lent and never went back.  I was reborn.

That is my hope for my relationship with Facebook.  Facebook was less an addiction for me and more an infuriating habit.  I would wake up, check my email, then scroll through Facebook and inevitably get disgusted by some inanity on my newsfeed.  Really great way to start the day.  So, Facebook, be gone from my phone forever.  I think my Lenten sacrifice has done the trick.  I’ll check it occasionally from my computer to stalk my sister’s new boyfriend and to check for photos of my favorite babies of friends.  Otherwise, I can revel in my ignorance of what all my quasi-friends are up to.  My eyes will have to adjust to a lot less rolling.

Happy Easter, y’all.

Glory Peep.

Happy Lent, y’all.  I missed getting ashes yesterday because the church in our neighborhood did not have an evening service.  Luckily, Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation, so missing Mass yesterday will not be the reason I go to hell.  This, however, might be:

I am the artist.

Yes, those are stained glass Peep saints.  It’s probably a good thing there aren’t any Christian extremists terrorizing cartoonists around the world for portraying Jesus as a Peep, because a) I would be their next target and b) that would just be silly.  I suppose an explanation is in order, however, for this immaculate peepception.

For the last few years, my sisters (without me because I was always far away) have participated in the Washington Post’s annual Easter Peeps Diorama contest.  This contest is one of those things out there that makes me believe that people (peeple…) are fundamentally good.  Just google it.  Lots of punny, good, clean fun.  My family’s favorite submission from last year was the finalist “Everyone Peeps.”  (I do think my idea for a “Governor Peep Peepie and the Bridgegate Scandal” diorama would have been a strong contender for the top prize.)

This year, my sisters didn’t think they were going to be able to schedule a weekend to meet and create a Peeps masterpiece.  We did, however, all find ourselves in Williamsburg last weekend to celebrate Erin and Peter’s engagement party and bridal shower…so my mom and Patricia thought, why not combine the wedding and Peeps festivities?  Thus, the “Erin and Peeper Wedding” diorama was born.  We presented it to Erin at the bridal shower on Sunday.  While I think everyone was amused and impressed (as they should have been), I think Peter’s family and friends may have been a little…confused.

And they lived peepily ever after.
